Look I know its sad. I know working conditions aren’t great over there, but I think its easy to blow this out of proportion. Foxconn is pretty much a city.
I did some quick math.
Suicide rate in Taiwan - 14/100000/year
Foxconn Employees - 485 000
Expected Suicides = 67 (14*4.85)
Suicide attempts at Foxconn in 2010 - 16
Extrapolated to full year assuming same rate - 35.
Suicide rate for Foxconn Employees is half the average of the country. 20% wage increases for factory workers just went through too. It’s sad, and being looked at, but I think everyone is making a really big deal out of it. When you have 500 000 employees, its easy to pull numbers and make things look bigger than they appear. Just my 2 cents.
